Scene - Carly & Jason after Sonny's breakdown Carly: I always thought he was terrible, you know? Just cold - empty guy. Treated me like I was less than nothing. You know? And I thought it was because I had hurt you? He says it's because I'm like him. That I destroy everyting that I touch.
Jason:Carly, he gets like this. Okay? It's no one's fault. He hates everything. He wants to wreck the room, he wants to wreck himself. I know how that feels. And so do you. But Sonny really does - he doesn't care what he says, or how much it hurts. If it hurts, that's even better. So whatever he said to you, mostly he was just saying it to himself.
Carly: You know, it never occurred to me that anyone could hurt worse than I do. That, you know, somebody could be lonlier and sadder and have more things that they regret than I do. I mean, I look around at the world and I think - poor me. You know? The worst night of my life - the wrong man came to Jakes, and I slept with him, and we had a baby. Because his brother wasn't there. And now my baby has the wrong father and I have the wrong husband. Isn't that terrible? My baby's alive, and you're alive. And I still have a chance to change. To make amends, and to love. And Sonny - poor Sonny. No matter what he does, no matter where he goes or who he's with - that night is always with him, threatening to pull him back. I couldn't help him, you know?
Jason:You did.
(she shakes her head, unbelieving)
* * * * *
Carly: Maybe you should call Benny, or Johnny. They're- They're probably looking for you. Um, they didn't know what to do for Sonny any more than I did.
Jason: Johnny's outside. He'll call Benny.
Carly: Good.
Jason: You know, what you did, is- is all anyone can do. Just be with him.
Carly: He didn't even seem to know I was here, half the time. You know what I told myself? 'Just gotta hold on until Jason gets back.' Of coure, I didn't know if you were coming back. Where'd you go?
Jason: I was in Canada, some of the time. And then I went to the island.
Carly: Were you thinking of staying gone for good?
Jason: My life is here.
Carly: I told you that.
Jason: Yeah, you did. You should- you should go.
Carly: Not until you promise me something. I need you to promise me that you don't hate me and that you don't think I betrayed you. I need you to know that whatever I did - even if it was wrong, Jason. Everything I did was for you. For you, and Michael, and me.
Jason: I know.
(they hug tightly, with the pillow she's clutching between them)
Carly: I missed you, Jase. Just don't ever leave me again.
(Sonny comes down the stairs)
Sonny: Why the hell is she still here? What are you waiting for? Show's over. Nuttin more to see.
Carly: Sonny... I came here to see Jason. Remember? I told you how much I missed him...
Sonny: Tell him outside.
Jason: C'mon.
Carly: (disappointed that he's still being a complete asshole) Okay.
(They walk outside to the elevators. Carly's still holding the pillow.)
Jason: You gonna make it home okay?
Carly: Oh, sure.
Jason: Yeah?
Carly: Yeah.
Jason: The Quartermaine's aren't gonna wonder where you were?
Carly: I'll tell them something. And if I can't really think of anything, I don't really care. I won't tell them I was with Sonny, don't worry.
Jason: Thank you.
Carly: Mmm. It's probably hard for him don't you think? I mean, knowing that I saw him that way? I wouldn't let anybody know who I really was except you - how I feel. I mean, I trust you. Sonny didn't mean to trust me.
Jason: But he can. I know that about you. When it counts, when it's for keeps, you stand up. And I owe you.
Carly: You owe me? How much do I owe you? Hmm? If we added it up, think we'd ever be even? No. There's no payback here. You just do what you can for people who matter.
Jason: I should have been here, Carly, and I wasn't. You were. I understand what that was like. How scared you must have been. You were really brave.
(He smoothes her hair back from her face, and she leans into his hand.)
Carly: Thanks. (she walks into the elevator) Ah. Oh, wait!
(The elevator doors begin to close, and she sticks the pillow through the doors just before they close. Jason chuckles and shakes his head, then heads back into the asylum.)
