Scene ~ The docks, Bannister's Warf (Carly's sitting on the bench, looking out at the water. Jason's at the top of the stairs, watching her. His phone rings, giving him away. He talks as he walks down the steps.)
Jason: Yeah? No, go ahead. Sign for it, start offloading. I'll be there in a few minutes.
Carly: (stands) Were you gonna say hi?
* * * * *
Carly: That's right. I'm supposed to be leaving you alone.
Jason: Well, it's- It's a public pier, right?
Carly: Which wouldn't matter anyway because I think about you even when I'm trying not to. How's Sonny?
Jason: He hates being locked up.
Carly: Well. It stinks. It's too bright. It's too loud. You don't know what's gonna happen to you. You don't know if you're gonna stay there or go someplace even worse. You know, I remember the first morning that they let you come and see me? What I remember is how you looked. Everything else was like sort of like a nightmare. And you were... You were real, you know, you were solid. And you gave me something to focus on, and... That's what Sonny needs. He needs to focus.
Jason: There's, uh- There's another hearing tomorrow. Alexis is gonna petition for bail again.
Carly: Will they let him out?
Jason: Unless the government comes up with new evidence.
Carly: Will they?
Jason: Don't know. I'm not a fed.
Carly: I just mean, you know. I mean if- If they had something? Benny, or... Some of the guys, you know? Somebody would have disappeared, right? And you would know that. And that hasn't happened.
Jason: Carly, I'll know more tomorrow.
Carly: If they charge Sonny does that mean they're gonna charge you too?
Jason: They might.
Carly: Well, if that happens, you know... You just have to tell them that it's my fault.
Jason: (laughs) What?
Carly: Rico. It's all about money, right? It's about lying on your income tax returns, and not paying taxes. And things like that, right? So you tell them that that only happened because you were living with me and I'm crazy. Which is a legal fact.
Jason: Yes it is.
Carly: So we might as well use it to our advantage for once.
Jason: 'Our' advantage?
Carly: I- I- I will testify that I burnt all your tax records and spent all your money and that, you know, you never knew what was going on while I was living with you.
Jason: Well, uh... What would AJ think about you testifying for me?
Carly: I don't care.
Jason: I do. Care. (pause) Michael would.
Carly: Michael would want me to protect his father.
Jason: Hold on. Carly, don't.
Carly: That's what you are, so.
Jason: (sighs) Look, if the feds have anything on me, they got it in the last few months. Okay? There's nothing you can do for me. Except give Michael a good life.
Carly: I am. You should see. I'm a good wife. (laughs) I go to all the right parties. And, you know, I dress approiately. I support AJ. I defend him to your stupid family. I congratulate him on all his business triumphs. He... (she motions out toward the harbour) He bought a new crane.
Jason: I saw.
Carly: Yeah. He... acts like it's a sports car or something. It's so strange. It's... He acts like it's me. This... sort of shiny new thing that belongs to him.
Jason: (staring out at the water) Yeah. That's about right.
Carly: (tearfully) You think I belong to him too?
Jason: No, Carly. I meant the crane. Look at that thing. (laughs) It's too big for the harbour. (she laughs) To keep it working at full capacity, you'd have to overcrowd the whole channel with ships. AJ spent a fortune on something and 3/4 of it's going to waste.
Carly: More than that. But he doesn't care, trust me. It's all about the way it looks. Which, by the way. I'm gonna be late for the charity guild.
Jason: Well, you have fun.
Carly: Yes. I'm sure I will. I'll show everybody my new necklace. (she pulls something out of her purse) By the way, um... I've been wanting to give you this for awhile. I've just been carrying it around, and...
(She hands it to him, and he looks at it. It's a picture of Carly holding Michael on her hip in the Q garden, by the bushes. It's the same day Michael was re-christned, Carly's in the same dress she wore for the *goodbye*)
Jason: He's getting big.
Carly: He's getting so big I can hardly pick him up anymore. He misses you. But, we both do.
(she reaches out to touch his cheek, but he catches her hand)
Jason: I miss you too. Carly, come on. You have to-
Carly: I gotta - go. Right.
(He watches as she walks quickly away and up the stairs)
