Carly & Jason ~ The End of Everything

Scene ~ Sliz's "art studio"

(Jason's lying on the sofa, dozing. He awakens when a hand tenderly caresses his face.)

Jason: (murmurs) That was quick.

(He turns his head, and his eyes come into focus on Carly's worried face. His brow furrows and he lifts his head a little, staring at her.)

This is the end of everything
This is the end I know
This is the end of everything
Take your love with you when you go

(Jason sits up, propped on an elbow, his other hand holding his side where he was shot. Carly is sitting beside him on the edge of the sofa, one hand on the back of it.)

Carly: Jase-?

Jason: How'd you find me?

Carly: Does it matter?

Jason: How?

Carly: I followed Elizabeth Webber. I didn't tell anybody, why? Are the police-

Jason: (reprimandingly) This is not an adventure, Carly.

Carly: Are you sick?

Jason: I can't- I can't do this.

Carly: What's the matter? (she tries to look at his side) Let me help you-

Jason: I- I don't- (he shoves her hands away forcefully, resulting in his face twisting in a grimace of pain) I don't want you here.

Carly: What's happened to you? (she manages to get a glimpse of the white bandage underneath his shirt) You're shot, Jason! My God! What happ- (he grabs onto her wrists and pushes her hands roughly away from him) How bad-!

Jason: Leave me-! (he holds her wrists in front of her and away from him) Alone.

Carly: No. I can't, Jason. (she stares at him with apology, remorse, pain, and sorrow in her eyes) I love you.

This is the end of happiness
This is the end of dreams
This is the end of everything
It's the end for you and me

(Now they're both sitting at opposite ends of the sofa, both lying back against the armrests. Both have their legs on the sofa too - interesting. Carly's arms are crossed tightly, her legs on the outside of the sofa with her ankles crossed. Jason's legs are under the blanket. His hand is still holding his side. Neither are looking at the other.)

Carly: -artist's studio? She's not an artist. She's a waitress. Why did you go to her? For help?

Jason: I didn't.

Carly: Don't you know that I would do anything for you.

Jason: Elizabeth found me.

Carly: (her eyes flick to his for a long silent pause) What is she to you?

Jason: (pauses, shakes head and mutters softly, almost defeatedly) Doesn't matter, Carly.

Carly: 'Doesn't matter, Carly'? (her voice is quiet, but accusing) I saw you with her. (she leans forward, arms still crossed) I saw you with her. I was standing outside of Kelly's. While you two were inside. Slow dancing, fogging up the windows. (she looks away, and starts to talk while looking upward and around - anywhere but at his face) I panicked. I went to Sonny. You know? Who else was I gonna ask? And he... He told me - that you were seeing her. He said that, you know, that she deserved you and I didn't. And - you were better off without me. And I hated him. For saying it, you know? (her eyes meet his) And I didn't wanna believe it, but I saw it. With my own eyes.

Jason: (shakes his head, not looking at her) That was just-

Carly: Just what?

Jason: (he sighs, and looks a little more away from her) It's not important now.

Carly: It is important, Jason. That's what started this whole thing! (pause, he looks at her again) Look, what I did. I mean, it was so stupid. It was the stupidest thing I've ever done in my life. I... It was so stupid, Jason. And I'm so sorry, you know? It was just a bad decision. And... And it didn't mean anything to me. You know I love you.

Jason: (his eyes drop from hers, he gives the barest nod) I know. (8 second pause. He looks up at her - angry, hurting, and sad.) I love you too. (he glances away, long pause)

I don't know
What to do
In my heart
I still love you

Jason: But that doesn't matter anymore. (Carly closes her eyes painfully, close to tears.) If you woulda- If you woulda fallen in love with Sonny... (he pauses, and closes his eyes as if the words hurt him) I woulda hated it. But I guess I could live with it. Cuz love just... You can't help. It is. (he raises his eyes to look into hers) But you did this to hurt me. You thought of the thing you could do that would be hardest for me - and you did it.

Carly: No! (she leans forward, shaking her head in denial of the accusation) I didn't think of it. It wasn't like that. I wasn't thinking about it, Jason!

Jason: (his voice is angry and accusing) You knew exactly what you were doing, Carly.

Carly: I didn't-! I'm sorry! What can I say, you know?

Jason: Yeah, I know. I know you are. And you think-

Carly: I'm really sorry!

Jason: And you think you're never gonna do something like this again. But guess what - you will.

Carly: I won't!

Jason: Because that's how you work.

Carly: No, I won't!

Jason: And you're gonna do something like this when you feel the need - to punish me.

Carly: I would never do that!

Jason: If I let you! So, I- (pause) I can't let you. (he stares at her, his face pained) You understand me?

(Carly shakes her head and mouths, 'No.' No - she doesn't understand? Or, No - she understands but she doesn't want to and she won't let him do this?)

Jason: This is over.

Carly: (she whispers, but her voice is strong and determined) It'll never be over between us.

Jason: You wanna help me? Get the hell outta here! Go. Don't come back. That's what I need right now.

(Carly blinks, her face taken aback by the vehemence of the order. A tear spills down her cheek and more glitter in her eyes. Then she decides to let him have that - for now, at least.)

Carly: Mmhmm.

(She gets up to leave. He won't look at her as she gathers her coat and purse and walks to the door.)

I don't know what to say
I will always feel this way

(But - of course she can't leave that easily. She bangs her fist on the door and turns back to him.)

Carly: (her voice is tearful, close to sobbing) I know that you hate me right now. And you know what? You have every right. (he doesn't look at her, and closes his eyes) But nobody will ever love you, the way that I do. (pause) And I know that you will forgive me because I know you better than you know yourself. And that's what you do. That's what you do. You forgive me. (It's said as a statement, but there's an undercurrent of desperation, of her begging him to make it true - to forgive her.)

(He still hasn't looked at her. She stares at him for a moment, her cheeks stained with tears. Then she reaches behind her to find the door handle.

And she leaves.

For the quickest split second, Jason looks like he wants to cry.)

This is the end of everything
This is the end I know
This is the end of everything
Take your love with you when you go
...
