In Memoriam of the Greatest Story Never Told...12/15/97After Tony and Carly's final breakup, Carly shows up at Jason's door, interrupting his *business* meeting... Jason: Before he moves on the city, we're gonna take it back.Carly: (heard through the PH door) You don't understand, he'll want to see me! He is my friend. He's my best friend! Jason: (trying to ignore the noise) You do the rackets- Carly: I don't care! I need to see Jason right now, dammit! He's got to help me. I've got something only he can help me with! Jason: Kurt- Excuse me a one second. Carly: I have to see him, do you understand? Open this-! Jason: (opens door) What are you doing here? Carly: Jason, I- I need you. Jason: I'm busy right now. Carly: Jason, please. It's really important. Jason: What? Carly: I did something you're... Really not gonna like. Jason: Look, I'm in a meeting. Carly: If you tell me to go, I don't know what's gonna happen to me. Jason: Could you stop crying? Do you have to be shivering? Alright, look. Just dry yourself off in the upstairs bathroom while I finish down here, okay? Reynaldo, warm her up a cup of soup that Graciella made.
* * * * * Jason: (takes the bowl from Reynaldo) Okay. Perfect. Thanks Reynaldo. Alright, look. (he hands her the bowl) You gotta drink this, it's soup. It's supposed to be good for you. Come over here. (she goes around the couch and the bowl wobbles on the plate as she movees) Careful. Carly: Tony says he doesn't love me. He thinks he never did. I guess that doesn't surprise you, I know you had no use for him. Didn't think I did either, you know... He was married to Bobbie, so... Bobbie Spencer is my biological mother. She gave me up for adoption when she was sixteen years old. I don't know who my father is... And she doesn't either. She thinks I'm dead. And some days I wish I was because I don't know who my baby's father is either.
* * * * * Carly: You know, my real name is Caroline Benson. I grew up in Florida... That's about the only thing about me that wasn't a lie. The people who adopted me... Well, my dad ran off with a waitress when I was a little girl and my mom... You know what? I'm not gonna do this. I'm not gonna blame them. I gotta stop that. They were a little screwed up. But who's not, right? Anyway, I went back down there to take care of her last year after she had a little stroke. And I saw her, laying in the bed so... innocent and sweet. I couldn't remember why I ever hated her so much. Anyway, after I left home, I must have used about twenty fake names. They all seemed just about as real to me as Caroline Benson, you know? And then, one day, this guy, a PI, knew everything about me, knew all my names. And he said that he had been hired from my mother, the woman that had given me up. Come to find out, that she was living in upstate New York, in a house that she owned, with her doctor husband, and a little boy that they had adopted. I mean, how the hell could that be, Jase? You know, she's not crippled or starving. Or dead, or incapable of raising me. And obviously she wants a baby because... Any baby but me, I guess. So, I... I really thought the first time that I laid eyes on Bobbie that she'd know who I was. That she would somehow recognize me and get on her knees and beg me to forgive her. Which didn't happen, obviously. So, I decided that I had to find another way to make her sorry. And that's what Tony was supposed to be. Until I fell in love with him. Pretty stupid, huh? Jason: Who else knows? Carly: Luke. Um, he never lets me forget it. And that's it. Nobody. Jason: What about the private detective? Carly: Luke hired your boss, Sonny, to run him out of town. Jason: What do you need me to do? Carly: Ugh, it's kind of complicated. But you know how Tony and I were... We fight, we break up, we get back together... Which should have told me something. Um, one night when we were kind of broken up, I slept with somebody else. And, as it turned out, that same night Tony and I made up... And I'm pretty sure that's the night that the baby was conceived. Jason: Carly, by made up you mean you had sex? Carly: Yeah. Jason: Okay, so. The baby's father is Dr. Jones... Or it could be AJ.
* * * * * Carly: (kinda shocked) What did AJ say to you? Jason: Nothing. Carly: Well, then why did you say his name? Jason: Was there somebody else? Carly: He must have said something. Jason: Carly, you two used my room at Jake's. Carly: God, Jase! You knew this whole time? Jason: Who else had a key besides me? AJ. And the next day he was hung over and you were lying like crazy about something. Carly: And you didn't even say anything. Jason: Well, like what? When you know two people had sex is there a particular comment you're supposed to make? Carly: So, I guess it doesn't bother you? I mean, he's your brother. Jason: Well, it would have been nice if you guys made the bed. Carly: Sorry. (pause) You know, since we're on the subject of AJ... I drugged him. Jason: He didn't want to have sex? Carly: Oh, shut up! Not that night. Later. The night in your room... He doesn't... Well, he didn't remember, he was so drunk. God, you know what? This story is really sounding more and more disgusting, isn't it? See, when I found out I was pregnant, it was like the answer to all of my prayers - if I had ever said any prayers. But I wanted the baby to be Tony's, of course. And so the fact that AJ didn't remember was a wonderful, beautiful thing. But then he wouldn't let it go. Jason: So you drugged him. Carly: See, AJ told me that if he ever slipped again he would check himself into a rehab center out of town somewhere and he would not come back. Which sounded like the perfect solution to me. Jason: Yeah, so you got him drunk. Carly: No. He worked too hard to stay sober. I could not do that. I realize knocking him out, dumping him in a courtyard, and pouring vodka all over him - which is what I did - was not exactly the nicest thing in the world to do. But at least it made me the guilty one, and not him. You know, somehow, at the time, that seemed to matter. Jason: He didn't know the difference between being drugged and drunk? Carly: No. I guess not. At the time, he didn't. But, he figured it out. Actually, I think it was that stupid Keesha. And then he figured out why I did it. And then I had AJ and Tony both telling me that they're going to take my baby away if it's theirs. Jason: Yeah, people get grabby about kids. Carly: Yeah. So, I told Tony, and I guess I'll have to tell AJ... that the baby's not his. Jason: That oughta shut him up. Carly: I told him it was yours. (Jason looks up at Carly)
* * * * * Carly: Jason, look. You don't know the half of it, all right? I have been blackmailed, pushed around, and yelled at for the last couple of months just trying to make things right for my baby. And there is no way that I'm gonna give up now. Jason: It never occurred to you that you might get caught? Carly: Yeah, of course it did. That's all I thought about. But, I guess somewhere in the back of my twisted mind I thought if I did, it would be different. Tony would see what I had done to keep us together, to hold on to what we had. And, sure, he would be angry. But he would love me for it, too. Well, that didn't happen. This did instead. And I know that it all sounds totally crazy, but they wanna take my baby from me, Jason. And if I don't do something, they will. And if I let them? Then I'm no better than Bobbie ... Say something please. Jason: Well, if you need to get married, I gotta tell you, I'm kind of busy right now. Carly: No, I don't need to get married. I am sick of wanting to get married. Look where that got me. Jason: Okay, so what do I care what you say to AJ and Dr. Jones about me? Carly: Then it's okay with you? Jason: Yeah, but don't expect them to believe you. Carly: Why not? Jason: They can count, right? You got pregnant long before Robin left for Paris. Carly: Actually, that already came up. Please don't be insulted, I would never tell anybody that you and Robin were not the real thing. But, I kind of told Tony that you were in love with Robin and having sex with me. You know, it's not totally a lie. If you knock off, what? A year and a half, it's almost true. Jason: Carly, when the baby's born... Carly: No, I know, I know. They'll want to do blood tests and what have you and the jig will be up. But at least I'll have between now and then to figure out what they hell I'm gonna do. Jason: What about AJ? He never walked in on us together. Carly: No, but if you tell him... Jason: Tell him what? Carly: What we've been talking about, that you and I slept... Jason, look, I realize that this is more than I have the right to ask of you or anybody. Jason: It's not that, I don't mind helping you out. Carly: Then what? Jason: You're great. You really are. The way you make up all this stuff and make people believe it. But I couldn't do it. Carly: Yes, you could. You see... Why, why? Because it's AJ? Jason: I'm not good at telling stories, Carly. I'm not even that good at listening to them. If it happened to me, I can tell you about it. But if it didn't, forget it. Now, you can say whatever you want about me to anybody you want, but don't ask me to.
* * * * * Jason: Look, if there's anything else I can do for you, I will. If you need money, a lawyer, a place to stay... Carly: Can I stay here? Jason: What? Carly: I mean, just for a little while. It looks like you've got plenty of room... Jason: Well, keep in mind - just last week somebody got shot for being in the same place I was. Carly: Yeah, I think I'd much rather get shot than be hounded by AJ and Tony. Jason: Carly, don't. Don't say that. Carly: I know, I'm just joking. But, you're on the top floor, you've got a guard at the door. I think I'd feel safer here than anyplace else. Jason: Okay. Carly: Thank you. (she starts to laugh) You must think I'm totally crazy. Jason: (smiles) You never get away with anything! But you always try and I have to admire that. Most people would give up, but you never do. Carly: Well, maybe AJ and Tony are right about me, maybe I'll make a horrible mother. But I'm pretty damn sure that I'm not gonna be the most horrible mother that ever lived. They- they wanna snatch my baby out of my arms the minute that it's born, if not before. I can't let that happen. Jason: Yeah, I don't get it. They already got to have sex with you, what more do they want? (Carly laughs) A baby is a person, and you can't own a person. Look, I got- I got some calls to make. You wanna take a hot shower? (Carly nods) Okay, there's plenty of bathrobes in the closets up there. Carly: Jason? Jason, okay... If I say that you're my baby's father and nobody asks you if it's true, would you have to deny it? Jason: If nobody asks, I don't have to say anything. But somebody will. Carly: Yeah, maybe. But we could have a deal until then. You just let me do all the lying - I'm very good at it - and you don't deny it. How would that be?
* * * * * Jason: You can stay in Stone's room, it's the last one on the left. I stay down on the couch anyway. Carly: Why the couch? Jason: Because if I go to sleep, I don't have to get up. Carly: Well, um, Jason, you know, you didn't answer my question. Jason: About if you lie and I don't? Alright, get this straight. You say whatever you want about me and your baby. As long as I don't have to make stuff up. That's what I don't like. That's what makes my face hot like I'm getting sick and I can't do it. Okay? So, if anybody asks if the kid is mine, I have to say no because I don't know what else to say. Until then, you're fine. Carly: I can work with that. Jason: And anything else I can do for you, I will. Carly: God, if I didn't have you... I hate to think. Thank you. I will try not to be in the way. Jason: It'll be nice, the company. Carly: My legs hurt so bad. I just feel like I've been running for a thousand years. Jason: Everything's going to be okay now. Carly: For a couple weeks. Jason: If nobody shoots us. Carly laughs. |
